The Ten Commandments Of Puppy Basic Training
I. Get The Necessary Education For Yourself.
Winging Puppy Basic Training is NOT an option. You need to find and read about solid methods for house, obedience, and anti-aggression training. Socialization with other dogs and people is a must-do.
II. Make Sure You Are Committed.
Commitment to training is the primary key to its success. There is NO giving up in puppy training.
III. Establish Yourself as the Leader
YOU are the pack leader. Your puppy is a member of the pack. If you cannot assume a leadership role, your puppy will. He knows no other way to live in the pack. If he takes over the leader's role, you can guess who will be training who.
IV. Treat Your Puppy As A Family Member
Treat your puppy as a family (pack) member, and he will respond accordingly. Do you take your puppy with you when you go out (event permitting)? Or do you leave him home to fall asleep or chew the furniture in complete boredom?
V. Sharpen Your Canine Communication Skills
People talk is NOT a dog's native language. He will NEVER understand your entire message. Maybe a word or two. Certainly the tone of your voice. And he will get a message from your body language.
Understand the animal's body language and sounds. For example, the author's pup Alvin combines a sound (whining) with a look. He communicates "You left my treats on the counter and I want them" with a whine and a longing stare in the direction of the food.
VI. Practice Patience and Consistency.
If you want to train your puppy, but you are NOT a patient person, good luck!
Dog training requires consistent application of the same activities in order for them to "stick." For example, once you teach a canine to sit with a hand signal, all family members should be using the same signal. If he is not allowed to jump up on family members but is allowed to jump up on visitors, he will be very confused!
VII. Remember That Rewards Work
Dogs respond to rewards of food, attention, and toys as long as the reward is immediate (within a few seconds of the command). When a puppy's action, whether it's positive or negative, is rewarded, he is likely to repeat the action.
VIII. Punishment Does NOT Work.
Punishment does not work with animals. Puppies cannot connect a whack on the nose with mischievous or otherwise bad behavior (from the human viewpoint). Punish repeatedly and fear and aggression will result.
IX. Show Respect for Your Pup
No matter how mischievous, aggressive, or destructive the pup, he will respond based on your respect for him. He senses how you feel by your attitude, tone of voice, and actions, however subtle or how unaware you are your behavior.
X. Puppies Deserve The Best Treatment
Dogs DESERVE clean water, nutritious food, medical care, shelter from the weather, and our attention and caring.
Practicing The Ten Commandments
Puppy Basic Training is what owners provide so that they can live comfortably with their dogs.
